Ringier wins the prestigious INMA Global Media Award in the category «Best idea to grow digital readership or engagement»

Ringier’s data and technology platform was awarded the INMA Global Media Award in the category «Best idea to grow digital readership or engagement» in Washington, DC, on Monday night. Ringier AG was among the finalists in two categories with the project «Using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to boost digital reader engagement». The International News Media Association (INMA) issues the Global Media Awards in recognition of the most innovative projects within the media industry worldwide.

On Monday night, the International News Media Association (INMA) announced this year’s winners of the Global Media Awards as part of the 88th INMA World Congress of News Media. The project «Using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to boost digital reader engagement», Ringier’s first entry in the competition, took first place in the category «Best idea to grow digital readership or engagement».

In fact, Ringier’s AI project was nominated twice as a global/national brand – it also featured in the category «Best use of new technology to generate revenue and engage».

Marc Walder, CEO Ringier AG: «This international recognition of our artificial intelligence and big data project is a huge achievement for Ringier. We are delighted to receive the Global Media Award. My congratulations to the whole team. We managed to assert ourselves against some top-level competition. To me, that says that we’re on the right path. Our top priority is the highest degree of customer transparency. Their confidence in the correct handling of their data is an extremely valuable asset, and one we would not compromise at any price.»

Xiaoqun Clever, Chief Technology and Data Officer at Ringier Group: «In the last two years, Ringier has developed into a technology-driven media company and has also made a name for itself internationally. We are proud that our AI project has been recognised at the INMA Global Media Awards. I would never have believed that in less than two years, and with a very small team, we would take this award against an extremely strong field of competitors. This is a great triumph for us, one that confirms our strategy and its implementation.»

Within the Ringier ecosystem strategy, Technology & Data functions as a key pillar that unites Ringier AG’s international content and marketplace business, leveraging and consolidating synergies at every level and remaining a relevant destination. As part of the strategy implementation, a technology and data platform was developed that allows customers to perceive brands through all online touchpoints and thus enhance the digital customer experience.

What distinguishes the Ringier platform from other products on the market is the large-scale, coordinated use of leading artificial intelligence technologies (AI), such as natural language processing, sentiment analysis and taxonomy classification. It is the generic nature of the platform that is particularly innovative. Where most market solutions tend to specialise in one or two fields of application, Ringier’s solution can be applied to any type of use case, right across the Group portfolio.

The prestigious Global Media Awards, which have been presented by INMA since 1937 for the best solutions in innovation and brand development, are regarded as the Oscars of the media industry.

This year a total of 830 projects from 220 media companies from 39 countries were submitted – a record. The entrants include the world’s largest newspaper and magazine publishers, digital media and TV and radio broadcasters. Some of the best-known global media brands numbered among the finalists and winners, including The New York Times, Axel Springer, Financial Times, Schibsted, The Telegraph, The Wall Street Journal, NBC News Digital, USA Today, The Economist, Dow Jones and Berliner Morgenpost.
